ABOUT MURRAY

Murray is located in Calloway County, Kentucky. It’s only 15 miles west of Land Between The Lakes National Recreation Area, which offers fishing, swimming, camping, boating, and wildlife viewing.

Murray-Calloway County has been named one of the 100 Best Communities for Young People three times since 2005 and, most recently, in 2008. According to America's Promise Web site, this repeated honor has been given to Murray because of its "emphasis on strengthening families and improving outcomes for children and youth by identifying needs, opportunities and priorities for future action; promoting effective city/school collaboration; encouraging and supporting youth voice, engagement and leadership; and measuring progress over time."

Murray hosts several annual events and festivals throughout the year, including the Freedom Fest and Highland Festival. These activities draw crowds from all over the region with their parades, farmer's markets, and street fairs.

Murray offers a plethora of cultural activities that are normally only available in larger cities. The city has two galleries: The Clara M. Eagle Gallery, which hosts around 1,200 permanent artworks and Wrather West Kentucky Museum. Clara M. Eagle has housed several temporary shows, featuring a range of artworks including contemporary art, African art, woodworking, and others. Wrather West Kentucky Museum highlights the social development and culture of the people throughout west Kentucky.

Playhouse in the Park is open year-round and produces everything including original works, comedies, dramas, children's theatre, and musicals. Two movie theaters are also located within the town, The Cheri Theatre and the Cinema International.

Murray State University, home to approximately 10,000 students, is also located within the town. Murray State University participates in NCAA Division I college athletics, the highest level of collegiate athletics, which draws sports fans during their athletic seasons.

Murray and Calloway County has a lot to be proud of, from the community involvement of local businesses to dedicated, caring leaders in government and education to hard-working citizens within the community.
